Proposals put forward by the Council of the European Union with regards to safety of personal data and how it is protected in the event of a breach of security have been designed with the interests of big businesses in mind. These proposed amendments to E.U data protection legislation compromise the security of the individuals personal data and do not require a company to disclose that they have been the victim of a security breach unless it is ‘critical’. This gives companies leeway to possibly hide potentially serious security breaches from the public in the interests of their own reputation whilst data that could be used to commit fraud is stolen from their servers, data that could be changed to protect the individual if warnings were to be made and publicized.
